I have been playing with the system to see if I could make it do what you described. And I can make it do it by pressing three keys, Ctrl+A (together) then ANY other key
Ctrl+A is the windows short-cut key for select all, and the next key you hit will replace everything that is selected.
So if you're having problems with your keyboard due to RA it's just possible to accidentally hit that key combination, especially as the Ctrl key is right beneath the Shift key, so if you meant to type Shift+A to get an upper case A, but hit the Ctrl key plus A by mistake that would select everything. Then, pretty much whatever key you hit next will delete the highlighted text and replace it with whatever key you pressed.
(Sorry to cast aspersions on your typing skills BTW)
If I'm right, then all is not lost because there is a way to get back your lost material, as long as you spot it soon enough. There is another Windows keyboard short-cut, Ctrl+z which undoes the last
n keystrokes. Hold down the Ctrl key and press Z repeatedly till the deleted text reappears.
Of course now you're going to tell me that you don't have a Windows PC. I am not familiar with Macs but I think they do have corresponding keyboard short-cuts.
Hope that helps
